Lives and works in Rome
Back to

During the 1980s Domenico Bianchi together with Bruno Ceccobelli, Gianni Dessi and Guiseppe Gallo formed the so-called “New Roman School”. He became best known for his luminous, monochrome installations that often contained a cross, a scrawled circle or a seemingly gyrating abstract symbol placed in the middle of his compositions. The Italian critic and writer Eduardo Cicelyn describes Bianchi's work thus: If we think of the repetition of the image as a slow rhythm of that which is immutable in the material of painting we finally realise that an; art takes shape, which in many ways is both logical and Western. And although we are aware of the impossibility of representation, the only real space being the canvas and its empty spaces, the figurative will in the end be devoid of the emotion that is the inexplicability of modernity. Bianchi attempts to rewrite the rules of earlier art with a calligraphy that temporarily suspends the emotion of the image but does not make the language incomprehensible. The pleasing and clear script ensures that the poetic and the aesthetic impression in his compositions is infinitely prolonged and the freshness and the splendour of the first impression is preserved.
